Food Campus

Food Campus
Helmond, Netherlands

The industrial waterfront of Helmond is located very close to the center of the city. All along the canal are workshops and factories such as fabric, metal industry, furnisher and etc. All though the canal used to be a very busy area, these days seems to be a urban vacant plot as all the factories either have run out of business or moved to a cheaper city.

As a research of preception a movie has been made for the studio to discibe the feeling and impression of the waterfront. his shotmovie is trying to imply that canal is getting seperated into two part: one part which is the majority of the waterfront that has no character and boring which makes people to just pass by very fast without wating to linger, and a very small part of the canal which gets a coziness character of a small Dutch city with bar next to canal and squares.

The result of the movie is a movement rage that clearly shows the areas in need of redesigning.

The most urgent location was chosen to be design. The location is the end point of the route.
Since the main functions there are a supermarket and a food museum, it has been decided to use all the elements in the site to turn it to a Food Campus which contains a cooking school, supermarket, community garden, food museum, super market and local food market. The main goal is to educate people about food and food industry.

The meaning of food is an exploration of culture through food. What we consume, how we acquire it, who prepares it, who’s at the table and who eats first is a form of communication that is rich with meaning.

The food campus wants to attract people and bring them closer with one common interest: Food. And use this opportunity to teach them everything about food and be a rural area in middle of the city.

One can choose to buy ingredients from supermarket or the market of urban agricultural land, go to food museum, learn how to cook or actually study cooking to become a chef, plant vegetable, or go to a slow food restaurant on the roof top.

The lost industry can turn to a new and active one. The combination of functions would be urban agriculture, reuse water tower for irrigation, food market, food museum, slow food restaurant and cooking academy.
