Eneco Energy Campus

Eneco Energy Campus
Utrecht, Netherlands

Sustainable energy for everyone

The former Lage Weide power station, which was put into service in 1959 for Utrecht’s provincial and municipal power supply, is located in Eneco’s industrial area in Utrecht. This is where Eneco began and became a big player in the old-world era of fossil fuel. The fact that this location in particular will be redeveloped into the Eneco Energy Campus, completely focused on the new world of solar energy, wind energy, geothermal energy and bio-gas, illustrates the transition of energy, a development that we all welcome and the pioneering role that Eneco plays in this.

In the following years Eneco’s closed factory area Lage Weide in Utrecht will be transformed into a dynamic place in the city, where companies and students can develop and test new energy transition applications: the Eneco Energy Campus. This project has been done in collaboration with Inbo and Partner in charge Aron Bogers (partner-architect at Inbo) and Rutger Büch (Circelstad) together with Harold Koekkoek ,Director District Heat and CHP assets at Eneco.

Harold Koekkoek: “In the past, the power station was built at the edge of the city, but nowadays it is located smack in the centre. It is my ambition to give this area back to the city and to meticulously transform it into an open campus – a site where companies and students can develop and test new applications that are focused on increasing the comfort and health of the residents of Utrecht and its surroundings.”

The ambitions are high, the targets are clear. The Eneco Energy Campus has to become an environment where ‘the new world’ becomes visible and where clients can see the newest products and developments. The venue in Utrecht is wide and inspiring. The atmosphere is open: anyone who wants to contribute to delivering (and dividing) the new energy for 60.000 Eneco clients can participate.

By transforming Lage Weide, Eneco says goodbye to the old world of coal power plants, oil platforms and gas extraction and focusses fully on the new world. The world of solar energy, wind energy, biomass and earth heat. Like no one else CEA Jeroen Haas sees the social revolution that comes along with this transition of energy. Together you create a sustainable and healthy living environment. “People want to be in control. In the future energy companies should help people to provide in their own need for energy.

At the Eneco Energy Campus we together shape the new world. What will your contribution be?
